Fredericia introduces Nanna Ditzel’s Trinidad Chair in exclusive wood
Since its introduction in 1993, the Trinidad Chair has sold hundreds of thousands of units, establishing itself as a modern classic with its poetic yet sturdy design. Now available in Oregon Pine with an aged-lacquered finish, it captures the vintage appeal of Nanna Ditzel’s original pieces.
A pioneering figure and Fredericia’s former main designer, Nanna Ditzel (1923-2005), was celebrated for her creativity, influence, and versatility. Her many striking and groundbreaking designs across various disciplines have left an enduring dash of poetic lightness and artistic innovation in the Danish design tradition. The Trinidad Chair remains her most succesful and globally recognised work.
Friendly, comfortable, and pushing the limits within production, the Trinidad Chair draws its inspiration from Ditzel’s trips to the Caribbean Islands. Captivated by the vibrant folk culture, stunning nature, and unique architecture, Ditzel’s remarkable design reflects the interplay of winds and sunrays with intricate fretwork and the shadows cast by trees on gingerbread houses. This plywood chair is instantly recognisable yet distinctly original.
Drawing parallels from her jewellery design, Ditzel adds expressive ornamentation and human curves to her chairs, aiming to evoke dignity and grace in the seated individual. Following the footsteps of iconic plywood chairs from the 1950s, Ditzel pursues refined forms and slender frames, embracing a neo-modernist aesthetic. Through material experimentation using Denmark’s first 4-axis CNC milling machine, she pushes production boundaries, realising her vision for the Trinidad Chair.

The new Trinidad Chair in Oregon Pine extends the legacy of the celebrated designer, whose 100th anniversary in 2023 was marked by the exclusive and limited Chaconia Chair crafted from the same exquisite wood. Oregon Pine, known for its durability and striking grain patterns, adds timeless charm to any space. Fredericia’s dedication to authenticity is evident in their specially developed lacquer, faithfully recreating the vintage appeal of Ditzel’s original pieces.
With the Trinidad chair, Fredericia combines contemporary design innovation with a tribute to Danish craftsmanship, promising to elevate any space with its unparalleled blend of style and comfort.
