A graphically striking design with an anchoring sense of stability, Anderssen & Voll’s new Massif bar and counter stools for &Tradition introduce new dimensions to relaxed dining settings and professional spaces.
Combining vertical legs with two elliptical platforms to create an elevated seating experience, the studio let exploration and form guide them during the design process.
“The initial idea for Massif sprung from an ongoing barstool study in our studio, looking for new and strong shapes while ensuring both the seat and footrest were equally represented,” explains Anderssen. He continues “There is a wide disc which supplies foot support – almost like we’ve raised a section of the floor and put it on four legs.”
Creating an elevated sense of sitting, the interjecting oak seat and powder coated steel footrest work to shape Massif’s unique character. The intuitive design allows users to comfortably meet the height of restaurant, hotel or bar counters, as well a typical home breakfast bar or kitchen island, while feeling grounded.
Aptly named Massif, the French word for a mass of mountain peaks, Anderssen & Voll’s design translates a sense of grandeur into two heights, 75cm or 65cm, and three variants: Dark Stained Oak and Warm Black, Oak & Grey Beige, Ember.
“The name ‘Massif’ is derived from the solid, totem-like expression throughout the object. There is also something about the elevated discs that makes us think of mountain plateaus,” adds Voll.
Massif’s richness in materiality is complemented by the smooth swivel function of the solid oak seats. The studio invested in extensive research to ensure a seamless, continuous turn that glides effortlessly.
