Press Release Blå Station @ Stockholm Furniture Fair 2007

To meet the demands and desires of today you need an innovative nature, a child´s curiosity – and a heart that refuses to take the easy way out. Blå Station is a family business based in the little seaside town of Åhus on the Swedish south-east cost, were the sea is forever restless. Just like us. Ever since the start in 1986, we are motivated by the pleasure of what we do and we continue to develop new products. And, for us, being new means demonstrating a new attitude to form, function, materials or processes. We endeavour to utilise the unique properties of each material.A created object is the result of a long process and it continues way after the product has first seen the light of day. As for Sting, designed by Fredrik Mattson & Stefan Borselius 2003, already many times awarded but still poking for attention.

This year we are happy to introduce Sting with:
a powder lacquered surface, a new seat pad & in a lightweight version; less 1,5 kilos!

The Black Chair collection a wooden chair – in whatever colour you wish.
Design: Fredrik Mattson 2007

Think about it!
We are spoilt. We squander natural resources without so much as a second thought – and then salve our conscience by buying the occasional eco-labelled product. Our lives are a materialistic chimera in which we close our eyes to the consequences of our actions.
Do we think that trees grow on factory floors? That cows are reared in tanneries? It’s time we faced up to the problems, took a step back and gave ourselves time to reflect…

We have enlisted the aid of history, following up leads and ideas all the way from the tomb of Tutankhamun to the late 1800s. Our ambition has been to interpret and analyse the associations, feelings and sensations that a wooden chair arouses. We hope our findings will help us to influence both consumers and industry alike – and hopefully reduce our exploitation of the natural resources to an absolute minimum.

Peek is a further development of the idea.
Design: Stefan Borselius 2007

It started with Peekaboo and the search for the answer to a question.
The role of the designer is not merely to create furniture that is beautiful to look at. It is also to
solve problems. Problems raised by the way we live our lives and by changes in the world around us. In this case the problem consists of two opposites – work and rest – both of which can be resolved by a single shared solution. A place you can be without being disturbed – and without disturbing others. The starting point for our work with Peekaboo was a simple question: How small can you make a space and still feel comfortable within it? By experimenting with techniques and materials, Borselius created a compact yet spacious item of furniture that is a cross between the classic batwing chair and a futuristic vision. The seat itself is a novel solution. Textiles have been laminated with sound-absorbent couching felt – a technique only seen on much more basic shapes until Peekaboo challenged the best brains in the industry 2005.

Peek is a further development of the idea a seat in which you can enjoy comfort galore even where space is limited. There is always a need for somewere to sit, but there is not always enough room for large, cumbersome chairs. With its slender proportions and a design that is so manifestly suited to it’s purpose, Peek meets this need in a functional and appealing way.
