Fasad is a rug collection that rethinks the potential of recycled wool by David Chipperfield Design – Kasthall
Kasthall adds a significant milestone to its sustainability journey with Fasad – a rug collection that rethinks the potential of recycled wool. In collaboration with the design office of Pritzker Prize-winning architect Sir David Chipperfield, Kasthall presents two new rug designs that are both timely and timeless – designed for today and enduring for years to come.
With Fasad, Kasthall is creating what it believes to be the world’s first rug collection using recycled post-consumer wool. Discover more about the process and the material.
The Fasad collection includes Uno and Duo – inspired by the brick façade of the Kasthall factory in Kinna, Sweden, with Uno featuring a uniform expression while Duo is defined by its structured design that consists of an even number of blocks. Both are presented in a natural, subdued color palette with glints of linen.
Wool has always been at the heart of Kasthall’s identity, and exploring the potential of this versatile material in innovative, ambitious ways is an important part of the company’s design ethos.
The Rhythm of Beauty and Structure
The process of incorporating this pioneering material into the collection
was not, however, without its challenges. Dirk Gschwind, Managing Director of David Chipperfield Design and creative partner on the project, spent quite a few hours at Kasthall’s factory in Kinna, Sweden, working together with the Kasthall team in pursuit of the perfect design.
“We wanted to create something beautiful and elegant with a decent but strong personality. The concept of layering to create a balanced structure in the rug was key to this, and after many iterations in the design studio and by the looms, the recycled wool proved to be more than capable of achieving the physical and visual character we were looking for,” he says.
Redefining Sustainable Rug Innovation
The project represents a significant milestone in the company’s sustainability journey, as CEO Mirkku Kullberg explains.
“For the first time, Kasthall is using material that contains post-consumer waste from outside parties. The environmental benefits this delivers and the potential it holds can’t be underestimated. We’re proud to be the first rug designers to innovate and create with recycled wool.”
