Fireplace Lamp by Hybe Design Team
Light separates day from night, radiates warmth in glacial cold, illuminates dullness. And Fireplace Lamp manages to create a luminous space both in the mind and the eye. The flickering glow experienced when walking by recalls wood burning in a hearth. HYBE DESIGN TEAM redefines the use of lamps beyond mere practicality. Fireplace Lamp offers a play of light and shadows transforming function into sculptural aesthetics.
’Light existed long before humans, light is in our DNA, we live around it and we need it in order to survive.’ exclaims Jun Takeda, CEO of Hybe Design Team.
The lamp is almost a ready-made: a mouth blown glass hovering upside down over a base resembling crossed logs. The finely slotted cylinder contains a dimmable LED-lamp that emits a shimmering illumination that evokes movement in the fixed design. The reimagining of wood stoves and open fires reinterprets the function of a lamp. Not only practical light for reading, but illumination for both mind and soul.
’I was fascinated by the beauty of the glass, it might be needed for water or for whiskey but how can we change the use of it? I think that the characteristics of the handmade glass reflects the warmth of the light beautifully, while the small slits let the glimmering shine move around. It gives a warmer feel than a mere industrial solution,’ explains Jun Takeda. Fireplace Lamp redefines both the use and the form of a lamp. Although perfectly practical as a light source, the design is just as much an art object that interacts with people moving around it. The experience will change with the motion of the viewer who then becomes a part of the design.
’It was love at first sight,’ exclaims Margot Barolo, product manager at Design House Stockholm, who discovered Fireplace Lamp as a part of Hybe Design Team’s installation at Rossana Orlandi Gallery during il Salone in 2023. ’You can keep it on the floor, or by a sofa dimmed down as ambient light, or on a table as a reading light.’
Probing the future while anchored in the past in order to present solutions for today has been Jun Takeda’s mission since he founded Hybe Design Team. His team of 8 designers and interior architects work closely with clients, artists, craftsmen, and construction professionals producing a wide range of interior architecture all over Japan. Fireplace Lamp is fully in the spirit of the office adding a special touch through bespoke design in almost every project.
