“Modern architecture often has stylistic forms without meaning. Be critical of them. Not a form, not a method of execution without meaning, without cause. Always ask why” Gunnar Asplund before a lecture.

Gunnar Asplund lived only 55 years, but during his short life managed to create some of our country’s most famous buildings from modern times. He has been a role model for architects in the Nordic countries and internationally. His architecture represents timeless values that have inspired generations and is therefore just as interesting today as when it was created.

The period usually called “Swedish Grace” (1910-1930) was a golden age in Swedish architecture and design. Gunnar Asplund was at the forefront of this development and thereby also laid the foundation for his own life’s work. He carried with him experiences of older traditions when designing houses for modern needs and conditions. The facade was not the most important aspect, but rather the interior spaces and fundamental values in architecture such as light, scale, proportions, and the relationships between the room, the building, and the surroundings.

The exhibition is created in connection with the publication of member Eva Eriksson’s book Gunnar Asplund. Architect in a Time of Transition 1909-1931, published by Appell Publishing in collaboration with ArkDes. The exhibition highlights Gunnar Asplund as an inspiring visionary architect.
