First introduced in 2014, the Fiber Chair, designed by Iskos-Berlin, was born from a wish to do a forward-thinking take on the archetypal shell chair.
Now, we are introducing the new generation of the Fiber Chair. The Fiber Armchair and Side Chair without upholstery now uses a minimum of 80% recycled plastic.
“One of the most difficult and noble disciplines of
design is to create simple, well-functioning and
almost ordinary objects that nevertheless have a
strong identity. We designed the Fiber Chair to do
just that through a clear sculptural language that
refuses to compromise on comfort. It is a chair
stripped of all unnecessary layers. The iconic form
marries soft, embracing curves with an innovative
wood fiber composite, giving the Fiber Chair a
unique expression and tactile texture.”
— Iskos & Berlin on the design
The Fiber Chair Family, designed by Iskos-Berlin was born from a wish to make a forward-thinking take on the archetypal shell chair. This was achieved by creating an innovative shell of plastic and wood fibers that makes for a soft inviting touch with a matte and tactile surface.
The new generation of Fiber Chairs is designed with a conscious perspective in mind and a wish to improve our environmental impact.
The Fiber Armchair and Side Chair without upholstery now offer a new perspective on the already iconic sculptural shell chair, introducing an innovative composite of recycled plastic and wood fibers. The shell is made from a combination of recycled plastic of which minimum 80% is recycled mixed with FSC™-certified wood fibers.
The recycled plastic used in the Fiber Armchair & Side Chair is sourced from post-industrial waste from the manufacturing of eyewear. High-quality recycled plastic has made it possible to recreate the Fiber Chair’s original strength and durability with the characteristic colors of the series, all while keeping the amount of recycled plastic at minimum 80%. For its unique sculptural shell, the recycled plastic has been mixed with FSC™-certified wood fibers to create a matte and tactile surface.
As part of our sustainable initiatives, we wish to increase our use of recycled materials in order to lower our consumption of natural resources and reduce waste. By switching to recycled plastic Muuto expects to save more than 50 tons of virgin plastic in 2022.
We at muuto sat down with Iskos-Berlin to uncover their thoughts and ideas behind the form of the iconic Fiber Chair.
