Mats Aldén is a Swedish furniture designer and craftsman whose practice bridges design and hands-on making. He trained in furniture carpentry at Capellagården on Öland in the mid-1980s, an education that still shapes his studio, AldenDesign, based between Vaxholm and a workshop in Kleva, Öland.
Aldén’s best-known body of work is his long-running collaboration with Nola, the Swedish outdoor furniture manufacturer, for whom he has designed the High & Low furniture series — a modular family that includes the High Round Bench, High Sunchair, High table and High Swivel Chair. He also designed Schoolyard, seating built for functional outdoor workplaces, and the Axel chair, alongside Grow, a bench and table designed together with Peter Andersson.
Alongside his own studio work, Aldén has collaborated with fellow Swedish designer Åke Axelsson, most recently through Öppen Verkstad, an open-workshop initiative in Kleva, Öland. His work moves between furniture design and interior architecture, built around materials and construction he handles himself in the workshop rather than handing off to production.
Aldén continues to design and build from his studio between Vaxholm and Öland.
