Softening the Edges: How Jasper Morrison Reimagined a Danish Classic – Fredericia

Jasper Morrison's reimagined Danish classic for Fredericia featuring softened edges while preserving original design essence

In partnership with acclaimed British designer Jasper Morrison, Fredericia presents a new upholstered lounge collection. Reflecting Morrison’s deep admiration for Børge Mogensen, the collection combines clean lines, exceptional craftsmanship, and sublime comfort. The result is a collection that balances aesthetics and durability, made to be cherished for generations.

“ The Jota Lounge Collection is a modern interpretation of the Mogensen/Fredericia aesthetic. It unites softer lines and colours with the stringent conceptual approach that characterises the originals. ”

Jasper Morrison on the Jota Lounge Collection

“My full awareness of Danish Design and Mogensen, in particular, only materialised about 15 years ago when I was asked to design an exhibition of the Danish Design Museum’s collection. At that time, I was asking myself what gave certain design products longevity, and it struck me that amongst all the pieces in the collection, so many of them still seem fresh and relevant half a century after their conception.

I was drawn to Mogensen’s designs in particular because they seemed closest to my thoughts that designs should have what you could describe as Stealth Appeal. They were not the most noticeable at first glance, but over time, they stood out as the most well-balanced, pleasing and efficient providers of both function and atmosphere. I started buying them in Danish auctions for a house I had bought in Mallorca, and over the years, I’ve admired how well they perform.

The combination of my experiences of the exhibition design and living with so many of the designs over the years has allowed me to absorb and understand their qualities so that when I came to consider a new sofa for Fredericia, it seemed most relevant to have them as a reference, both for the quality of them as objects and for the continuity of Fredericia’s identity, so Jota began with the thought of a somewhat softer approach to how the Mogensen sofas are made.”
