The Spark armchair emerged from a study of comfort, lightness and materials by Chris Martin – Massproductions

Spark Lounge Chair
Lightness and comfort are qualities that don’t always go together, but they are elegantly combined in Spark, a lounger that’s just as pleasing by the fireplace at home as in a public lounge area. The minimal steel construction is softened by leather arm rests, upholstery clad in canvas and wooden runners, making an exquisitely slender, contemporary chair with an unmistakeable resemblance to the Swedish “spark”, a traditional kicksled.

”I wanted to create as much air as possible around the chair, without sacrificing comfort. I had an idea to design Spark in a steel wire construction, as you can create a lot of structure and strength in that material. I chose to combine the steel with organic materials such as leather and wood, to give it a softer feel. Spark has been a favorite since it was launched in 2016, even though I was not really happy until now. Finally, we have solved all aspects of construction and aesthetics. I still love it and have it at home”

About the collection
The Spark armchair emerged from a study of comfort, lightness and materials in 2016. It is not common for designer Chris Martin to combine several materials in one product. The product development involved several experimental decisions on how the combinations of wood, metal and textile should be combined in an armchair. After an extended development period of solutions and adjustments, an updated version of Massproductions’ Spark is now available.

The name Spark refers to the traditional Swedish snow sledge, from which the armchair is not completely different. In English, the name also gives images of sparks, perhaps from a fireplace, which is a suitable connotation when it comes to a lounge chair with footrests.

”The first sketch of Spark was just a scribble, it had no logic, it was more of a feeling. There were two parallel feet with a little weight, a few rough lines between them and the seat shape consisted of a flat surface with another for a backrest. It was just a rough sketch, but it had a nice balance and look. There were blurred images in my min before I realized how the steel wires needed to be placed”, says Chris Martin, Designer in Chief, Massproductions.
