Verk’s newest sofa pairs Mia Cullin‘s solid pine frame with textiles by Ingegerd Råman — ecological leather cushions filled with Swedish wool, on a piece built entirely from domestic materials. It is a direct expression of the commitment Cullin has held since 2020: to work only in local, natural materials — wool, hemp, hardwoods — and to leave synthetics out of her studio altogether.
From Konstfack to her own studio
Cullin studied at Konstfack, the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, with further study at the Design School in Copenhagen and the Accademia di Moda e Design in Florence. She founded her own studio in Stockholm on graduating from Konstfack in 1998, working across furniture, objects and acoustic surfaces for both private and public interiors.
Working with Anki Gneib
With fellow designer Anki Gneib, Cullin has built an ongoing collaboration that began in interior architecture and exhibition work before extending into furniture: Mandala for Karl Andersson & Söner, and more recently their first joint furniture collection, Universe — sculptural pieces built from horizontal planes balanced on latticed spheres.
Acoustic surfaces and natural materials
For the American manufacturer Filzfelt, Cullin designed the Current and Tide acoustic panels, felt surfaces shaped by ocean movement that double as space dividers. The same material sensibility runs through her furniture for Materia, including the Yarn easy chair and the Today bench and daybed, and her planters and climbing frames for Nola’s public spaces.
Exhibitions
Cullin’s solo exhibition SAMBAND | INTERCONNECTION at Galleri Gemla explored a single joint reworked into two distinct weavings, developed through material and scale variations into wall reliefs and graphic pattern — including a participatory wall built from visitors’ own waste materials over the course of the show.
