Background
Roger Persson was born in 1967 in Karlskrona, on Sweden’s south-east coast. He studied furniture design in New York in 1997, then returned to Sweden to complete a master’s degree in industrial design at HDK — the School of Design and Crafts in Gothenburg — graduating in 2000. While still a student, he won a prize at a furniture design competition in Kawasaki, Japan, in 1999, an early signal of the international recognition his work would continue to receive.
Studio and practice
After graduating, Persson co-founded the Gothenburg design studio Stilpolisen. In 2009 he set up his own practice, Roger Persson Design, which he continues to run from Gothenburg today. Furniture and lighting form the core of his work, but his output has ranged unusually widely beyond it — into exterior doors, retro-style electrical switches, toys and 3D scanners.
Selected work
Persson has designed extensively for Karl Andersson & Söner, including the Sander collection — spanning café, conference and lounge seating — the Locus pedestal table, made entirely from wood, and the Cubebrick storage system. For Swedese he has produced the Bespoke furniture series, spanning lounge chairs, tables and an angled variant, together with the Happy sofa and easy chair, the Konnekt & Botanic collection and the Mandy easy chair. His Lamell bench for Nola took his furniture into public and outdoor space, and he has also designed the Nostalgi bench for Essem Design.
Recognition
Persson’s furniture has been exhibited across several European countries as well as in Japan and the United States. Nearly three decades after his first prize in Kawasaki, he continues to design furniture and lighting from his Gothenburg studio for a client list that spans Sweden’s established manufacturers.
