Where Two Traditions Meet: The Suru Lounge Chair
The Suru lounge chair by Carina Maria Mølgaard Nielsen for FDB Møbler draws its name from the Japanese word for “through” — a reference to its defining gesture: two organic shells, one passing through the other, meeting in quiet counterpoint.
Resting on a wooden frame with pronounced mortise joints, the chair holds its construction openly, without concealment.
The design reflects Mølgaard Nielsen’s dual background. Trained at Teko in Herning and grounded in upholstery craft, she brings a tactile understanding of material to her work. Her sustained interest in Japanese design thinking — with its emphasis on restraint and form — finds natural common ground in the Danish furniture tradition. The Suru chair is a considered meeting point between the two.
The result is a lounge chair suited to stillness. Neither heavy nor imposing, it offers presence without weight — a functional object for both contemporary and historically minded interiors.

CARINA MARIA MØLGAARD NIELSEN
Carina Maria graduated from Teko in Herning, but with a background as a upholsterer has a strong craftsmanship that shine through in everything she has done. At the same time as she has roots in Danish furniture tradition, she is very inspired by Japanese design language, which she believes has many similarities with Scandinavian design.
