Wästberg has introduced Alto Wall, a new addition to the Alto lighting series designed by Berlin-based product designer Dirk Winkel.

The compact wall-mounted fixture extends a family that already includes floor and pendant versions, bringing the series’ approach to indirect illumination into smaller spaces.

Alto Wall delivers uplight angled slightly outward, distributing soft, indirect light across a room without harsh contrast or glare.

The design draws on brutalist aesthetics — a strict, geometric form held in deliberate tension with the calm, atmospheric quality of the light it produces. Multidirectional LED technology creates an unusually wide-angle spread, bright enough to fill a space comfortably while remaining fully dimmable.

The broader Alto series is built around the potential of indirect light across different environments. Floor, pendant and now wall variants each address a particular scale and context, with the wall version suited to rooms where floor space or ceiling height limits other options.

Dirkwinkel | Scandinavian Design

Dirk Winkel graduated from the Royal College of Art London with an MA in Design Products in 2010 and established his studio in Berlin in 2011. His practice focuses on lighting and furniture, with a stated interest in formal purism, the limits of mass production, and new materials. He has taught Design Construction at the UdK Berlin since 2012 and was appointed guest professor for product design at HBKsaar in 2022. His work has received recognition including the Swedish Design Award (Svensk Form), Designs of the Year at the London Design Museum, the German Design Award (Special Mention), and the Editors’ Choice Award at Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair.
