Swedish designer Pia Wallén has released Collection 01, a limited series of four garments made from a personal archive of English wool cloths that she has preserved over several decades with the intention of putting them to use.
The collection comprises a long coat, trousers, a wool skirt, and a shirt. Each piece is numbered — a direct consequence of the finite quantity of fabric available — giving every garment a singular position within the series.
Two of the wool colourways were custom-dyed for Wallén around the year 2000, and several fabrics feature a subtle stitch pattern developed in collaboration with a Swedish quilting factory, adding a further layer of tactility to the material.
All four garments were produced by hand at Stockholm-based tailoring atelier LiLaRo, where precision and handwork are central to the practice. The collaboration also serves as a tribute: Collection 01 coincides with LiLaRo’s closure, and Wallén’s decision to work with the atelier at this particular moment is an acknowledgement of their craft and contribution.
Pia Wallén, born 1957, graduated from the fashion programme at Beckmans College of Design in 1983. She is known for bringing felted wool into a modern design vocabulary and for works including the Crux blanket (1991) and the Tofflan slipper. Her pieces are held in the collections of Nationalmuseum and Röhsska museet in Sweden, and at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
