Unlikely Connection at Milan Design Week
During Milan Design Week 2026, designer Vincent Laine presented Unlikely Connection, an experimental sculptural seating piece developed in close collaboration with Vestre.
The work was exhibited as part of Isola Design Festival, Milan’s leading platform for independent and exploratory design, bringing together international designers, studios and manufacturers during Fuorisalone.

Unlikely Connection explores how apparent opposites can coexist, and even depend on one another. Inspired by the universal principle of entropy, the project reflects how friction, tension and contrast can give rise to new forms of harmony.
At its core, Unlikely Connection is about togetherness.
A state of coexistence.
A shared condition created through difference rather than uniformity.
A sculptural approach to seating
The piece is composed of twelve vertical galvanised steel plates, forming a precise architectural base. This rigid structure is intersected by a soft, cloud-like upholstered volume, introducing comfort, tactility and atmosphere.
Industrial weight meets softness. Structure meets intuition. The result is a seating piece that exists somewhere between object and environment — functional, yet deliberately expressive. A place to sit, pause, and experience contrast in balance.
Where contrast creates connection
Unlikely Connection reflects our belief in how shared spaces can bring people together. By allowing contrasts to coexist rather than compete, the piece echoes how public spaces function at their best: as places where differences meet, overlap and find balance. Where people come together — sometimes to talk, sometimes simply to share a moment.
For Vestre, this is where design matters most. We create furniture for public life because we believe that well-designed shared spaces can foster mutual understanding, encourage togetherness and nurture a sense of public belonging. Not by enforcing sameness, but by making room for difference.
From collaboration to public life
Developed in close dialogue between Vincent Laine, Vestre and Reidar Svendsen Design, Unlikely Connection reflects our ongoing commitment to experimental collaboration — projects in which sculptural expression, material research and industrial manufacturing inform one another.
Exhibited during Milan Design Week at Isola Design Festival, Unlikely Connection becomes a physical expression of this approach: shaped by contrast, realised through collaboration, and ultimately given meaning through use.
