Museum of Furniture Studies by Cobe Opens in Älmhult, Sweden, in 2027
Danish architecture firm Cobe is converting a former IKEA warehouse in Älmhult, Sweden, into the new premises of the Museum of Furniture Studies. The building is scheduled to open in early 2027.
The project retains the existing industrial structure — steel frame, roof trusses, and concrete floor — while adding three large façade openings to bring light and visibility into the space. Inside, Cobe is introducing a timber structure that adds a mezzanine level and a series of enclosed rooms within the larger volume.

Ground-floor spaces will be dedicated to exhibitions and workshops. The mezzanine will house an open, accessible collection of more than 800 furniture design objects. A double-height void cuts through both levels at the heart of the building, forming a central “canyon” intended for temporary exhibitions.
The museum’s programme spans furniture design history, the contemporary design scene, and support for emerging designers. Älmhult is the town where IKEA was founded and still maintains its headquarters.
