Background

Helene Tiedemann began her design career as a fashion designer before moving into industrial design, going on to study Industrial Design Engineering at Central Saint Martins in London — a path that set her on a career spanning some of Scandinavia’s best-known manufacturers.

Career

After her studies Tiedemann worked at David Davies Associates and Koncept Stockholm, designing hotels, exhibitions, and retail interiors, before turning to furniture, textiles, and product design under her own name, a practice that has also included illustration work. She spent several years as an in-house designer at Habitat, and has since designed for Iittala, David Design, Asplunds and NC Nordic Care,, working across glass, upholstered furniture, and healthcare-oriented seating.

Education and teaching

Tiedemann holds a postgraduate degree in Architecture and studied Psychology for several years alongside her design practice. She has taught at Beckmans College of Design, Konstfack, and the Royal College of Art in London, and lectures in Product Design at Central Saint Martins, the school where her own career began. She also sits on the board of Sveriges Designer, the Swedish association of professional designers, representing furniture design.

Design philosophy

Her work is defined by calm, welcoming lines and a sense of comfort, often carrying a note of animation or playfulness within an otherwise restrained, Scandinavian idiom. Many of her pieces draw on both historical and contemporary reference points rather than settling into a single design era.

Work for Ihreborn

Tiedemann’s most extensive current body of work is for Ihreborn in Värnamo, where her output includes the Play-Wood coffee table, its solid-oak shape inspired by guitar picks and boomerangs, and the Bumble Bee lounge family, which has grown to include the Fly chair and the Daddy Longlegs bar stool, alongside further pieces in the brand’s Blob and Talk collections. Tiedemann now works within Borgström/Tiedemann, a design studio she runs together with Matz Borgström.
