Some dinners are meant to last. Flora, a new dining chair by Oslo studio Grung Engesvik for Swedish furniture maker Fogia, was created with exactly that in mind.
Developed over a year and a half together with chef and restaurateur Esben Holmboe Bang of Maaemo, Oslo’s three-Michelin-star restaurant, the chair was designed for evenings where guests remain seated for three or four hours.

The collaboration
The project began with a familiar chair. Maaemo has used Fogia’s Bollo chair by Andreas Engesvik since 2020, but as Bollo spread to restaurants around the world — and appeared in TV series such as Succession — Holmboe Bang wanted something no one else had. He called Engesvik, who in turn called Fogia CEO Marcus Huber.
“Esben presented us with a challenge we simply had to accept: create the ultimate dining chair,” says Huber. “A chair that is exceptionally comfortable and distinguished, making you feel elegant when sitting in it.”
Holmboe Bang sees Maaemo as a Gesamtkunstwerk — a total work of art — where every object contributes to the whole. In that setting, the dining chair’s role is to give guests maximum comfort. In the same spirit as the restaurant’s kitchen, the team chose to work with as few ingredients as possible and get as much as they could out of them.

Design and construction
“We’ve been uncompromising in our quest to provide the highest possible level of comfort,” says Andreas Engesvik. “This is a chair that works in harmony with the body. When you lean back, it moves with you, and likewise when you lean forward to stand up.”
Generosity is central to the design. Flora is considerably wider and somewhat taller than most dining chairs, approaching the comfort of an armchair, yet the upholstered seat and backrest remain remarkably slim. Much of the comfort comes from the steel frame, which responds to the body’s movements. The chair’s most distinctive feature is the slender, unbroken line of its tubular steel frame, where the rear legs continue upward to form the armrests — a detail that demands precision in both design and craftsmanship.
Although created for Maaemo, Flora is intended for any setting where style and comfort matter: homes, conference rooms and hotels.

Dimensions, price and availability
Flora measures H 81.5 × D 64.5 × W 69 cm. The powder-coated version has a delivery time of 6–8 weeks, while the stainless steel version ships from February 2027. Prices start at SEK 12,685, NOK 13,075, DKK 9,625, EUR 1,415 and USD 2,040, excluding VAT.
