Lars Hofsjö is a Swedish furniture designer whose work centres on flexible, practical seating for public spaces and homes. He is best known for the Nestor modular sofa for Skandiform and a series of chairs and sofas for David Design.

Background

Hofsjö trained in industrial design before moving into furniture. That background shows in his method: he builds products from a small number of well-resolved parts and refines details through prototypes and testing rather than starting from a fixed aesthetic idea.

Design approach

Flexibility is the common thread. Hofsjö looks for functions that let a piece adapt to how people actually live and meet, whether that means a sofa that can be rebuilt in new configurations or upholstery that can be renewed part by part. Sustainability follows from the same thinking, with durable construction and components that can be replaced instead of discarded.

Designs for Skandiform

Nestor, launched in 2018, is built from seven simple parts that combine into anything from a bench to a long winding sofa. The family has since grown with castors and an attached table and with Nestor High, whose tall backs add privacy. The stackable Canard chair, inspired by the balance of a duck, pairs an ash seat and back with a slender metal frame.

Designs for David Design

For David Design, Hofsjö designed the Skift chair, later extended as Skift Plus Wood, the Polo sofa system and Verner, a family of sofas and armchairs conceived as a tribute to Scandinavian design classics, with seat and back that can be upholstered and reupholstered separately.
