A Timeless Circle Returns: Børge Mogensen’s BM0121 for Carl Hansen & Søn

Børge Mogensen's BM0121 circular coffee table reissued by Carl Hansen & Søn featuring timeless Danish design and craftsmanship

Carl Hansen & Søn is relaunching Børge Mogensen’s circular dining table BM0121 in solid oak. The 1952 design stands out for its ingenious simplicity, with focus on functional details and quality craftsmanship.

Børge Mogensen presented the BM0121 dining table in 1952 at the Arts and Crafts Spring Exhibition in Copenhagen, Denmark, as part of a democratic furniture series designed with small homes in mind. Carl Hansen & Søn is now relaunching this functional table, which is the first circular extendable table in the collection.

Børge Mogensen is well-known for his ability to design furniture for everyday use yet with high aesthetic appeal, and the dining table is no exception. At first glance, his BM0121 seems very simple, but on closer inspection it conceals several complex details that demand a high level of craftsmanship. The tabletop, for example, is only 19 mm thick, which enabled Mogensen to create a particularly light and elegant look. Stability is ensured by incorporating bent steel profiles on the underside of the tabletop. In addition, the table’s upwardly curving apron creates a beautiful profile while creating extra leg space. Finally, the slightly tapered legs further enhance the light expression of the table.

As no drawings of the table exist, Carl Hansen & Søn has recreated the design from an older original model which has been meticulously measured by hand. The dining table is designed for four people, but can seat six when extended, and is constructed with a traditional pull-out and extension leaf in solid oak.

Knud Erik Hansen, CEO and third generation owner of Carl Hansen & Søn, says: “It has long been a desire on our part to present a circular dining table that matches our many iconic chairs. In addition, Børge Mogensen’s table is perfect in a contemporary context, where global urbanisation contributes to many people having less living space, requiring flexible and space-optimising interior design solutions.”
