The launch of a highly unconventional new pendant simultaneously marks the start of a new collaboration between the talented designer Louise Campbell and Louis Poulsen Lighting. The idea behind the new Campbell pendant is to reproduce some of the most rewarding experiences that outdoor light can give us. Louise Campbell describes what inspired her to design the luminaire:
‘The greatest contrast between natural and artificial lighting comes from the fact that there is only one single source of natural light, and we never look at that directly. Our sense of light is governed by countless naturally created layers that filter and reflect light before it reaches us. A stroll through the woods is a perfect example. We see the layers, the depth, the height, all the intermediate spaces. That special atmosphere cannot be reproduced, and a single light source cannot satisfactorily illuminate an interior space. There simply isn’t enough distance. We can, however, capture the essence — a light source in a multi-layered pendant creates an interplay that highlights the spaces and brings them into focus. The light is filtered in a way that brings out the mellowness of natural light.’
The designer’s intentions are crystallised in the finished pendant, and the result is a lamp that creates an intense ambience. The Campbell pendant has two equidistant shades of blown, clear glass with frosted sandblasted stripes. The shades cause the light rays passing through to change direction. The frosted stripes further enhance the unique sense of depth as well as shielding glare from the light source. The sandblasted stripes add a dramatic lighting effect, and the luminaire gives off diffuse light.
The outer and inner shades of the Campbell pendant are made from blown sandblasted glass, with connecting pieces and top cap fixture of plastic and metal. The pendant is 275mm in diameter and 365mm high. It can be fitted with various light sources such as a Concentra 60W E 27 incandescent lamp or, alternatively, a 13W energy-saving light bulb.
The Campbell pendant has been designed with the private market in mind and will add a striking dimension to many rooms in the home. In the professional market, the pendant can be used to advantage in restaurants, hotels, meeting and conference rooms and reception areas.
