Carina Seth Andersson Exhibition Mono @ Galleri Glas September 4 – October 3 2024

Renowned designer Carina Seth Andersson is presenting a new exhibition at Galleri Glas in Stockholm from September 4, 2024.

Known for her impressive projects and pioneering initiatives in the design world, Carina has worked for prestigious companies such as Svenskt Tenn, Arket, Skruf, Iittala, and Marimekko. She has created numerous modern classics, including the Daggvasen for Svenskt Tenn.

The exhibition at Galleri Glas will showcase unique glass objects and sculptures that balance on the border between functional objects and free-standing sculptures. Carina’s work is characterized by courage and curiosity, allowing the materials to guide the process.

“‘The materials take over, they lead the process,’ says Carina Seth Andersson.

Her creative process begins with drawings and sketches, where paper models are used as part of her meditative work. These models help her later communicate her visions with glassblowers and craftsmen.

When it’s time for hands-on work with glass mass, Carina shapes the glass and sees how it becomes bubbly and cloudy. Adding sand in different colors and sizes creates fascinating possibilities and changes the materiality of the glass. This technique reminds us of how the world’s best chefs in experimental kitchens combine unexpected ingredients and welcome chance.

The sculptures in the exhibition often have their starting point in functional objects such as flasks, vases, and corks. In this exhibition, Carina will experiment with placing the flasks and vases in new perspectives and conditions. The oversized corks resemble Roman mirrors in silver and bronze, but also evoke associations with bubble gum bubbles and balloons.

Carina emphasizes that the glassblower’s technique helps her aim for the unexpected and that surprises are welcome.

“‘It’s important that they’re not “perfect”, but that there’s something that doesn’t quite fit,’ says Seth Andersson.

The exhibition at Galleri Glas will feature more than 20 unique works, as well as some tree-like objects.

‘Trees and glass go together. It feels good to work with materials I don’t know so well. It’s a challenge to myself, to meet myself from another perspective,’ says Seth Andersson.

Visitors to the exhibition can expect a journey through the history of art and design, where clean and minimalist forms meet organic and living forms, where the character and potential of materials are explored and emphasized.
