The Bruno Mathsson Prize 2020 is awarded to the British-Swedish designer Chris Martin. The Bruno Mathsson Prize has been handed out annually since 1984 and is the largest design award in the Nordic region with a prize sum of 250 000 SEK. Due to the current pandemic there will not be a public prize ceremony this year. In the fall of 2020, the Vandalorum Museum of Art and Design will present Chris Martin in an exhibition with an accompanying lecture. The board of the Karin and Bruno Mathsson Foundation gives the following motivation in choosing Chris Martin as the 2020 prize winner:
“Super normal” describes a combination of two aspects of design. Super: spectacular, brilliant. Normal: intentionally sustainable, good functional design. British furniture designer Chris Martin – Swedish since 2016 – unites both in his innovative designs. He elevates archetypical elements to artistic heights, with humor and playfulness at a level that can withstand repetition within the series. With technical skill and artistic talent, he contributes to the enrichment of furnished living spaces.

About Chris Martin
Chris Martin (b. 1970) has an MA from Royal College of Art in London and started his career as an assistant to Jasper Morrison. Collaborations with Thomas Eriksson and Thomas Sandell lured him to Sweden in 1995, where the main task was to design furniture for different clients. In this new environment, Chris Martin and Magnus Elebäck found each other. The friendship grew and in 1999 they decided to start their own business. A wish to work independently from other producers was developed gradually, and in 2009 they launched Massproductions, an operation where they today are in charge of the design as well as the manufacturing, distribution and marketing. Through this all-encompassing approach, the aim is to create timeless good design with maximum knowledge of materials and techniques, with sustainability in all aspects. The breakthrough was the wire chair Tio with a clear identity and a visual lightness. After that, a large amount of furniture with strong dimensions and a self-evident aura has been created, such as the Odette stool for the Stockholm airport Arlanda, the Landa conference table, and the Roadie sofa that transparently delineates rooms in environments defined by the freedom of nature.

About the Mathsson Foundation
The Bruno Mathsson Prize is handed out by the Karin and Bruno Mathsson Foundation in Sweden, that was created in 1983 through a donation from Karin and Bruno Mathsson. The purpose of the foundation is to support research, development and education related to objects as well as indoor and outdoor environments.

Bruno Mathsson-pristagare 2020: Chris Martin
Bruno Mathsson-priset 2020 tilldelas formgivaren Chris Martin. Bruno Mathsson-priset delas ut årligen sedan 1984 och är det största designpriset i Norden med en prissumma på 250 000 kronor. Det blir inte någon offentlig utdelning av årets pris på grund av rådande pandemi. Hösten 2020 kommer Vandalorum att presentera Chris Martin i en skissutställning med en tillhörande föreläsning.

Super Normal beskriver en kombination på två aspekter av design. Super, suveränt strålande. Normal, medvetet god, hållbar, funktionell form. Den brittiske, sedan 2016 svenske möbelformgivaren Chris Martin förenar båda i sin innovativa formgivning. Han lyfter det arketypiska till konstnärlig höjd, inkluderar humor och lekfullhet till den nivå som tål seriens upprepning. Med teknisk skicklighet och artistisk talang bidrar han till berikande av möblerade livsmiljöer.

Chris Martin (f. 1970) är utbildad vid Royal College of Art i London och inledde sin karriär som assistent till Jasper Morrison. Samarbeten med Thomas Eriksson och Thomas Sandell lockade honom till Sverige 1995, där arbetet kom att bestå i formgivning av möbler för olika beställare. I den nya miljön fann Chris Martin och Magnus Elebäck varandra. Vänskapen växte och 1999 beslutade de sig för att starta eget. En önskan om oberoende från andra producenter utvecklades successivt och 2009 lanserade de Massproductions, en verksamhet där de idag ansvarar för såväl formgivning som tillverkning, distribution och marknadsföring. Ambitionen är att genom detta helhetsgrepp skapa tidlös god design med maximal material- och teknikkännedom samt hållbarhet ur alla aspekter. Genombrottet blev ståltrådsstolen Tio med tydlig identitet och visuell lätthet. Därefter har det blivit ett stort antal möbler med formstarka dimensioner och självklar aura, såsom pallen Odette för Arlanda, konferensbordet Landa samt soffan Roadie som transparent avgränsar rum i miljöer definierade av naturens frihet.

STIFTELSEN KARIN OCH BRUNO MATHSSONS FOND
16 februari 1983 bildades Mathsson-fonden genom donation från Karin och Bruno Mathsson. Fondens ändamål är att främja forskning, utveckling, undervisning och utbildning inom områdena föremål samt inre och yttre miljö. Varje år utdelar fonden Bruno Mathsson-priset på för närvarande 250.000 kronor.
