Founded in 1926, DUX is a Swedish family-owned design company specializing in premium furniture and beds with a singular vision to create the world’s best place for rest and recovery. Now in its fourth generation under the Ljung family, DUX combines genuine craftsmanship with exceptional comfort and design quality.
From Chicago to Värnamo
DUX was established by Efraim Ljung, a Swedish industrialist whose vision reportedly traced back to a stay in a Chicago hotel in 1924, where he encountered an exceptionally comfortable bed built on spiral steel construction. That discovery became the starting point for a company that would go on to shape Swedish furniture as much as Swedish sleep.
The Bruno Mathsson years
The company’s furniture identity took its defining shape in the mid-1960s, when Eric Ljung — Efraim’s son — began a collaboration with Bruno Mathsson of Värnamo. The partnership produced several furniture classics still associated with DUX today: the Jetson armchair, with its cockpit-like silhouette and ball-bearing swivel base, became the company’s bestseller for 44 years. The Karin armchair, with its padded steel-tube frame, proved so influential that it was copied by roughly twenty other manufacturers. Ingrid, Eva and the Pernilla series rounded out the collection, bringing Mathsson’s bentwood language into DUX’s furniture range and onto the floors of institutions such as Rosenbad, the seat of the Swedish government.
A contemporary furniture collection
That furniture-first identity continues today through collaborations with some of Scandinavia’s leading studios. Claesson Koivisto Rune has designed several pieces for DUX, including the Anita easy chair and the Lunaria table collection, while Norm Architects contributed the Domus collection, built around a solid oak frame finished in wax oil.
After a near-collapse in 2013, the fourth generation of the Ljung family — Charlotte and Henrik Ljung — relocated production to a smaller, boutique factory in Sösdala, choosing to rediscover the company’s heritage rather than scale into mass production. Discontinued furniture models were brought back into the collection alongside new work, restoring the same craftsmanship-first approach that defined the Mathsson years.
