Dan was born in Stockholm in 1975 but grew up in Japan. He has studied at the Hokkaido Tokai University, the School of Design & Crafts at Göteborg University (Gothenburg) and the University College of Arts, Crafts & Design in Stockholm. Dan Sunaga works to his own personal philosophy of design: “I search for the tension which develops between emotion and theory.” Dan has designed Itomaki coffee table (2007) for Karl Andersson & Söner. This is constructed with a number of interlinking wooden sticks held together by a steel wire. Itomaki is a Japanese word for the spool or reel on which yarn is wound. Together with Staffan Holm, they designed the Newton table for Karl Andersson & Söner in 2009. This coffee table won the Nordic Design Prize in 2009.
