Danish Design Icon Mogens Koch Moves to Fredericia Furniture

Iconic furniture design changes manufacturer after fire at Getama

A devastating fire at Getama’s facilities has led to a significant shift in Danish furniture manufacturing. Mogens Koch Design, renowned for its classic bookcase system from 1932, has announced a new partnership with Fredericia Furniture.

The February fire, which destroyed Getama’s production and administrative facilities, catalyzed this strategic move. Despite reconstruction plans, Getama will cease production of Koch designs by year-end. Mogens S. Koch, representing the design house, views Fredericia Furniture as an ideal partner, citing their established industry presence and manufacturing expertise.

Starting January 2025, Fredericia will manage Koch’s collection production between their Svendborg factory and Snedkergården in Them. Key to this transition is the retention of skilled craftspeople familiar with Koch designs, ensuring production excellence remains within Denmark’s borders.

Getama’s own story, dating back to 1899 in Gedsted and including notable collaborations with Hans J. Wegner, faces uncertainty. While the company contemplates reconstruction, their silence about future plans has sparked industry speculation.

Fredericia Furniture’s CEO Rasmus Graversen emphasizes the natural alignment between Koch’s dedication to craftsmanship and Fredericia’s heritage, which includes past work with Børge Mogensen. The collection will launch through Fredericia in spring 2025, marking a new era for these classical designs while maintaining their Danish production roots.
