Erika Lagerbielke (b. 1960, Stockholm) is a Swedish glass designer whose 40-year career at Orrefors has produced some of Scandinavia’s most celebrated stemware collections, including Intermezzo, Merlot, Difference, and More.

Lagerbielke comes from an artistic family—her mother Gunilla was a textile artist and Dean of Konstfack, her father Lars a graphic designer.

She discovered her passion for glass while studying industrial design at Konstfack, where she was captivated by the hot, amorphous material during a summer class at Orrefors glass school.

Orrefors recruited her while still a student in 1982, recognizing her sensitive, elegant style. Her breakthrough came quickly with the Intermezzo collection (1984), featuring an encased drop of blue glass that became recognized as a milestone in glass design. The series remains in production after four decades.

Her design philosophy centers on the sensory experience: “I design for all the senses. The glass should emphasize the drink, have good balance and also be a delight to the eye.”

Lagerbielke’s prestigious commissions include the wedding set for Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel (2010, gift from Swedish Parliament and government), Linnaeus University’s vice-chancellor chain, the Hook of Sigfrid for the Diocese of Växjö, and a baptismal font bowl for Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford.

She has received Excellent Swedish Design awards three times (1985, 1995, 2002), the Prince Eugen Medal for outstanding artistic achievement (2010), and Stockholm’s St. Erik’s Medal (2014). Since 2005, she has served as professor at Linnaeus University, conducting research on the cultural heritage of Swedish glass.
