Hortus Poetica – Exploring Materiality, Colour and Form by Gunnel Sahlin
Vessel Gallery Presents Gunnel Sahlin, one of Sweden’s leading contemporary designers and glass artists, who has created a collection of dynamic and colourful glassworks in association with Sweden’s oldest arts and crafts association, Konsthantverkarna, Stockholm.
Sahlin’s current passions include exploring the limits of glass materiality, colour, form and light taking her inspiration from the natural world around her. Sahlin was born in Umeå, northern Sweden, and studied at Stockholm’s University College of Arts, Crafts & Design. She has over 20 years experience in the Swedish glass industry and has exhibited in New York, Norway and Tokyo.
She has held a professorship at Stockholm’s College of Art, Craft and Design, as well as the renowned Pilchuck Glass School in the US. Between 1986-2005, she was designer at Kosta Boda, Sweden’s most prestigious brand of glassware and glass art.
About Konsthanverkarna – A member run organisation including some of Sweden’s best skilled designers and craft artists based in Stockholm, Sweden. The members exhibit in Sweden and all throughout the world. Several of them are represented in art and design museums, at the National museum, Stockholm and at Röhsska museet, Gothemburg. Their work can also be found in private collections as well as in public spaces.
Common for the selection of artworks and artists are the passion for materials and high technical skills. Some works are small-scale handmade productions but most of the objects are unique or limited editions.
