Höganäs Kakel presents an exclusive tile collection created by Carin Wester, with inspiration drawn from five Swedish female artists. The collection is a tribute to their creative heritage, while each color reflects an element in each artist’s work. The collaboration marks Carin Wester’s debut in the interior design world.
“We are proud and happy to engage one of Sweden’s most beloved designers. Carin Wester brings an innovative yet down-to-earth expression,” says Rickard Wessberg, Marketing Manager, Höganäs Kakel.
For this collection, Carin Wester has drawn inspiration from iconic Swedish female artists whose works reflect the versatility and depth of the Swedish art scene.
“When Höganäs Kakel contacted me, saying yes felt natural. Their ability to create materials that combine history with modern elegance aligns well with my ambition to unite art and function in my design projects,” says Carin Wester.
Five colors inspired by five female artists
The colors draw inspiration from five prominent Swedish artists: Hertha Hillfon, Karin Larsson, Lisa Larsson, Märta Måås Fjäterström, and Signe Persson-Melin. Each tile has a unique crackled surface that creates a timeless character and enhances the material’s natural texture. The luster in the tiles reflects light and adds subtle dynamism to the room while becoming a powerful visual detail in the interior.
-
Hertha Hillfon (1921–2013) One of Sweden’s foremost ceramic artists, known for her soft forms and poetic expression. The blue tile is a tribute to her iconic face sculptures in the same color.
-
Signe Persson-Melin (1925–2022) A respected designer and artist with timeless works in clay and glass. Her mosaic installation on the T-centralen platforms, in yellow and brown shades, inspired the butter-yellow tile.
-
Karin Larsson (1859–1928) A groundbreaking artist and designer whose textiles and interiors left a mark on Swedish design history. The burgundy tile draws inspiration from her work The Family Tree and the creative home Lilla Hyttnäs in Sundborn, which she created with her husband Carl Larsson.
-
Lisa Larsson (1941–2024) A beloved ceramicist and artist, known for her playful and expressive sculptures of children and animals. The black tile reflects the characteristic facial expressions of her figures.
-
Märta Måås Fjäterström (1873–1941) A pioneer in Swedish textile art, whose innovative rugs united tradition with modernity. The khaki-colored tile was inspired by the stylized flowers and leaves in her timeless works.
For Carin Wester, the collaboration has taken on a personal touch. In her own kitchen in Bromma, she has designed and had built a tiled stove with the tile Karin, a deep burgundy tile from the collection. The color captures light variations and reflects the house’s history and character.
“Between 1924 and 1967, artist Eva Schillberg lived in this house. Her life was about fighting for her place in the art world, and therefore the tiled stove became a tribute to her life and work. It also became the heart of the house – both warming and beautiful year-round. Tiles offer endless possibilities; it’s not just about covering a wall but also about creating art in your own home,” concludes Carin Wester.
