In collaboration with the Icelandic designer Gudmundur Ludvik, Carl Hansen & Søn presents the Timbur Outdoor Bench, which stands out for its quality craftsmanship and minimalist aesthetic.
Timbur means ‘timber’ in Icelandic, which ties in with the aesthetic of the bench and its light yet robust look where the untreated teak becomes a focal point. Ludvik’s background as a cabinetmaker is reflected in the design of the bench, where the natural structure of the wood is an inherent part of the overall look. He has challenged the balance between simplicity and exclusivity by keeping all the details to a bare minimum. What remains is a harmonious design emanating calm and strength.
Gudmundur Ludvik, B. 1970.
Deeply rooted in the Scandinavian tradition of design and craftsmanship, Gudmundur Ludvik is fascinated by the balance between simplicity and complexity. By exploring challenges through multiple perspectives, Ludvik strives to understand and reduce his designs to the core to transform them into simple and intuitive solutions.
Born in 1970, Gudmundur Ludvik grew up in Iceland where he from an early age became curious to know how things are composed. His love and appreciation of wood and craftsmanship led Ludvik to train as a carpenter and, after working in construction for several years, he continued his studies at the Icelandic Academy of Arts where he studied sculptures. As part of his training, Ludvik moved to Copenhagen in 1999 to study furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy. Shortly after finishing his studies, he established his own practice, Studio Gudmundur Ludvik, from where he found his playground in pursuing opportunities within crafts, art, and design.
