Hans Christer Ericson, known as HC Ericson (1945–2012)

Was a distinguished Swedish graphic designer, typographer, professor, and artist who passed away on December 16, 2012. His death marked a significant loss for the Scandinavian design community.

HC Ericson gained recognition for his exceptional book art, creating works that he authored, illustrated, and designed himself, often incorporating photography, drawings, and graphics. His artistic approach combined traditional craftsmanship with innovative visual communication.

Throughout his career, Ericson collaborated with leading Scandinavian design companies including Lammhults, Kosta Boda, Gärsnäs, Playsam, TV4, and IKEA, contributing his distinctive graphic design expertise to these renowned brands.

His work earned numerous prestigious awards including Utmärkt Svensk Form (Outstanding Swedish Design), the Guldägg Platinaägget, Svensk Bokkonst, Berlingpriset, and Schönste Bücher aus aller Welt. In 2002, he received the Torsten and Wanja Söderberg Prize, one of Scandinavia’s most distinguished design honors.

As an educator, Ericson served as professor of graphic design at the University of Gothenburg throughout the 1990s and later as guest professor at Mid Sweden University. He taught at institutions including Beckmans College of Design, Konstfack, and the Denmark Design School. He was also a co-founder of Österlenskolan för konst och design in Simrishamn (1995).

HC Ericson’s work is represented in the collections of Nationalmuseum Stockholm, Röhsska Museum, and Nasjonalmuseet Oslo.
