Inside Swedish Design — Stockholm Design Week 2021
Stockholm Design Week 2021 took place in February under unusual circumstances.
The Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair was held entirely digitally due to the pandemic, and showrooms across the city operated by appointment only.
Within this context, the initiative Inside Swedish Design offered one of the week’s most focused showcases of the Swedish furniture industry.
The exhibition “Presence and Innovation” was organised by Interior Cluster Sweden in collaboration with Beckmans College of Design, Swedish Wood, and the Swedish Design Movement — a government-initiated programme aimed at positioning Sweden internationally as a design country. The exhibition was curated by designer Sara Sjöbäck, with 18 alumni from Beckmans contributing work that placed alongside products from established Swedish manufacturers.
The venue was Stockholm Auction House (Stockholms Auktionsverk), where the exhibition ran as a physical installation combined with a virtual walkthrough, live talks, and an online auction of products from the participating companies. The digital format allowed the initiative to reach an international audience at a time when physical travel was not possible.
Participating companies included: Abstracta, Albin i Hyssna, Baux, Blå Station, Bolon, Dux, EFG, Fabrikant, Folkform, G.A.D, Gemla Fabrikers, Green Furniture, Gärsnäs, Johanson Design, Källemo, Lammhults, Mylhta, Nola, Offecct, Ogeborg, STEEL by Göhlin, Stolab, Storängen Design, String Furniture, Zero, and Välinge Innovation.
The programme of talks addressed themes including sustainability, circular design, and the role of locally sourced materials — with a particular focus on Swedish wood and its potential in furniture production. The exhibition built on the film “RESPECT – Inside Swedish Design”, which later won Gold and Grand Award at the World Media Festival in Hamburg.
Inside Swedish Design positioned the Swedish furniture sector not only as a manufacturing industry but as a community with shared values: sustainability, quality, transparency of production, and a commitment to original design.
