J39 dining chair in six new colours by Børge Mogensen – Fredericia

FREDERICIA’S J39 CHAIR IN SIX NEW COLOURS

The J39 dining chair is one of Børge Mogensen’s well loved, and best-known designs. It was a surplus of wooden dowels in the factory warehouse that inspired Børge Mogensen in 1947 to sketch and design the J39. While most would see this excess as waste, Mogensen saw opportunity, which led to the manufacture of one of Denmark’s most popular wooden chairs – the aptly nicknamed ‘People’s Chair’.

J39 is a chair that has outlived changing fashions and styles. The design is straightforward and modest, with a broad backrest and hand-woven paper cord seat. In both oak and beech wood, and occasionally in a very modern looking black lacquer with matching paper cord seat. Although J39 is not known for its wide range of colours, Fredericia has broken with tradition in 2015 and introduces six new colours in shades of green, blue, nougat, yellow, grey and red.

Fredericia believes that this new colour palette will offer a striking contrast and accentuation to the chair’s natural paper cord seat. The colours have been selected for their ability to be mixed and matched in compliment to each other.

Mogensen was well known for having a global inspiration, and although synonymous with Nordic design, the J39’s methodology comes from traditional Mediterranean furniture crafting. J39’s distinctive character is visible in its simple functionality, which has made the J39 a true Danish design icon.

With its supportive back and hand-corded seat, J39 is a comfortable dining chair that does not compromise on aesthetics. The modest design ensures that it can blend in with existing interiors or stand out as the visual focal point of any room.
