The Ocean Bench is a part of the Ocean Collection, a reimagined outdoor series, originally designed in 1955 by Jørgen and Nanna Ditzel.
The burnt red version is made from post-consumer e-waste. E-waste is considered the fastest-growing waste stream in the world. E-waste consists of mixed plastic parts from end-of-life electronic appliances such as fridges, displays, keyboards, etc. Recycling end-of-life electronics conserves limited natural resources and reduces pollution of the environment.
The Ocean Collection is designed for disassembly, meaning that the design allows each component in its purest form to recycle into new production circles.
Nanna & Joergen Ditzel were born in respectively 1923 and 1921. They meet each other at the
Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, where they both were students. In 1946 they
established their own design studio. The period from 1946 to 1961 was very productive for the
young couple. After Joergens death in 1961 Nanna continued their joint project alone. Many
new things were designed the following years, until her death in 2005.
In our search for a design that could fit this pioneering sustainable production method, we
partnered with Dennie Ditzel, manager of the design legacy after the late Joergen and Nanna
Ditzel. Together we screened the archives for designs that could be ideal for this new material
and production method of using discarded fishing nets and other ocean plastic waste collected
from the Oceans, resulting in the Ocean outdoor collection.
