Marianne Tuxen created the Tulip Pendant for the Carlsberg Academy in Copenhagen – Carl Hansen & Søn

In 2022, Marianne Tuxen created the Tulip Pendant for the restoration of Carlsberg founder J.C. Jacobsen’s historic and imposing villa in Copenhagen. Blending classic elegance with modern aesthetics, the pendant, which until now has only adorned the Pompeii Hall in the Carlsberg Academy, is now available for a broader audience for the very first time.

The Pompeii Hall, for which the pendant was originally designed, was inspired by ancient Italy with its conservatory, glass ceilings and pillared courtyard. Understated in its design, the Tulip Pendant blends seamlessly into its lavish surroundings, adding a touch of modernity and simplicity with an opal white glass shade that mimics the characteristic petals of a tulip.

The shade, which is mouth-blown in three layers of glass, provides a uniform, glare-free light, while the small aperture at the bottom provides downward task lighting. The precise, solid brass suspension is designed to merge with the shade to form a perfect, organic whole.

The pendant hangs beautifully either on its own or in clusters and can be used in both private and public environments.

Knud Erik Hansen, CEO and third generation owner-manager of Carl Hansen & Søn, says: “With the Tulip Pendant, Marianne Tuxen has created an understated light fixture that, with its fine details and exquisite materials, illuminates any room in the most beautiful way without stealing the spotlight. The pendant is manufactured at our factory in southern Jutland, where local craftsmanship and unsurpassed technical expertise translate into products that will bring joy for many years.”

Marianne Tuxen (b. 1958) strives to create beautiful experiences with her light fixtures, guided by the belief that light has the power to transform everything.

Born in the Frederiksberg district of Copenhagen, Tuxen discovered her passion for drawing and design early in life. After graduating from secondary school, Tuxen travelled to the United States to study graphic arts and sculpture. Upon her return to Denmark, she began studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ School of Architecture in Copenhagen. Here, Tuxen created her first lamp, which was put into production before she had graduated in 1985.

Tuxen’s mode of expression strives towards simplicity and logic, resulting in products that are functional and harmonious in almost any context. The quality of light serves as her constant inspiration, as she experiments with curves, proportions, materials, surfaces, colours, light, and shadow to craft light fixtures that create a perfect ambience.

Throughout her career, Tuxen has worked on a number of projects for national and international companies before establishing her own design agency in 1988: Tuxen Design, which specialises in lighting. Her ideas and designs have won a number of design awards, both in Denmark and abroad, and her works can be experienced at the following institutions: CPH Airport, Novo Nordisk Foundation, Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art, Carlsberg Foundation, and Rockwool Foundation.

”I always dream of creating universally wonderful experiences through the use of light. In a totally dark room, your perception of what goes on around you is close to zero – it is rather like being weightless. There is no focus point. Only darkness. Without light, our visual experience narrows down to nothing. But as soon as the slightest opening for light appears, we begin to perceive the space. We start to get some idea of what the room is actually about.

An immense number of visual inputs influence our perception. Through the conscious process of working with light, those factors can be manipulated in predefined ways to create countless perceptions of not only size, colour and space, but also of moods, atmospheres, feelings. When successful, the results are universally wonderful experiences. Light changes everything.”
