Mark Isitt, host of Grand Designs Sweden and perhaps the country’s most outspoken architecture critic, is making a return to this year’s Hem & Villamässan. This year, his message is clear: the aesthetic value of architecture needs to be highlighted and discussed more broadly.
As a journalist, author, and host of the popular Grand Designs Sweden, now in its fourth season on TV4, Mark Isitt is a prominent voice in Swedish architecture. With his critical eye and passion for the form and function of buildings, he will once again take the stage at the Hem & Villamässan to inspire and challenge visitors.
“In Sweden, the artistic values that make us fall in love with a house are often overlooked. At this year’s fair, I hope to spark more conversations about the aesthetic aspects of building and how crucial they are for our relationship with our home,” says Mark Isitt.
Architecture’s Role in an Age of Sustainability
At Hem & Villamässan, Isitt will deliver two presentations each day, where he will share his thoughts on urban planning, architecture, and residential environments. He argues that aesthetic values have a vital role in the sustainability debate, especially when it comes to preserving and caring for buildings.
“A sustainable house is more than just energy-efficient materials. It must be aesthetically pleasing for us to want to take care of it in the long term. It’s beauty that binds us to a home and makes us care about its upkeep,” says Mark Isitt.
Changing Perceptions of Architects
Another key issue for Mark Isitt is changing the public’s perception of architects. He often sees how people hesitate to hire architects due to the misconception that it is too expensive or inaccessible.
“Many people are afraid of architects and think they’re terribly expensive, but that’s not true. I want to show that architects are an incredible resource, and their work can be a crucial factor in creating both beautiful and functional homes,” explains Mark Isitt.
Curiosity Around Grand Designs Continues
Isitt will also answer questions about what it takes to participate in Grand Designs Sweden. Many are curious about the types of projects selected and what makes a project interesting for the show. He emphasises that it’s not about money or the size of the houses but rather unique, innovative ideas.
“We’re looking for projects that challenge convention and showcase innovation in architecture and construction. It’s not about budget or square metres, but about creative vision.”
After each presentation, Mark Isitt will be available off-stage, where visitors can meet him in person and ask questions.
