MENTON is a pendant lamp crafted from lightweight aluminum, designed with vertical slats that form a distinctive sculptural silhouette.
Its rotor-inspired structure is both architectural and functional, creating a lamp that is as striking in form as it is in function.
A LEGACY OF LIGHT IN DANISH DESIGN
The piece was designed from Tivoli’s Hanging Gardens in Copenhagen. In this project, garden architect Eywin Langkilde created flower pots, while Simon P. Henningsen introduced a series of lamps to complement them. By placing the slats vertically, Henningsen achieved the effect of a rotor that could slowly turn in the wind, bringing subtle movement and a sense of wonder to the gardens. The first experiments for this concept were carried out in Menton, South France, where Henningsen had his summer house and developed ideas for Tivoli’s lighting. MENTON was never released for general production and remained a one-of-a-kind design made exclusively for Tivoli. Today, LYFA reintroduces this extraordinary lamp, making it available for the first time.
CONCEPT AND CRAFTSMANSHIP
MENTON reflects Simon P. Henningsen’s experimental approach to lighting design, where movement and geometry merge into a single expression. Crafted from aluminum, the pendant is defined by precisely arranged vertical slats that create a sculptural and rotor-inspired silhouette. The repetition of the slats introduces rhythm and depth, while the lightweight construction enhances the subtle sense of movement that originally characterized the design in Tivoli’s Hanging Gardens.
LIGHTSCAPE
MENTON’s vertical slats diffuse the light evenly, casting soft, rhythmic patterns that shift gently as the lamp moves. The result is an atmospheric lightscape that combines dynamic play with a calm, ambient glow, making MENTON ideal for both intimate settings and architectural spaces. This lamp can be dimmed if you use a dimmable light source and connect it to a compatible dimming system.
