Crafted from solid wood, Miau is a testament to the material’s ability to be shaped into something both organic and tactile.
Designed with a deep appreciation for wood’s natural properties, it highlights both the elegance and complexity of working with this natural material.
Despite its seemingly simple appearance, the Miau chair is the result of meticulous craftsmanship. “We really aimed to achieve a sense of simplicity, so that you don’t think about the complexity when you see the chair,” GamFratesi explains. “But once you understand how it’s made—the challenge of shaping such details in solid wood—you truly appreciate the work behind it.” The harmony between simplicity and technical mastery is what makes Miau a timeless piece.
The design and production process were an intricate journey for GamFratesi. They spent years developing the chair—refining the design while navigating digital meetings across different time zones. Every element had to be precise, and the subtle adjustments along the way made the process even more complex. With remote collaboration, details could easily be misinterpreted, adding to the challenge.
When they finally received the first prototype in their studio—delivered by post—it was an emotional moment. The artisans had shown remarkable respect for every detail discussed on screen, and the prototype was flawless. After nearly three years of working without seeing a physical product, relying solely on digital models and remote discussions, holding that chair in their hands was overwhelming. It was a powerful reminder of the craftsmanship and dedication involved.
The name “Miau” carries a sense of playfulness, referencing a cat—an organic, living inspiration. GamFratesi felt that, in designing a solid wooden chair like this, the armrest would always be touched and caressed by the hands of the user. The smooth curves of the armrest invite the hand naturally, creating an instinctive connection between the user and the material. “When you have an armrest, it’s something you really want to touch, and it’s something you will always touch,” says GamFratesi, emphasizing the importance of this sensory experience. The name felt natural, reflecting the chair’s warmth and the way it draws people in through touch.
The Miau series, which began with the Miau Armchair, has evolved to include dining tables and lounge chairs, further expanding its versatility. Whether placed around a dining table, as a sculptural statement in a corner, or as a comfortable lounge piece, each element in the Miau series embodies the same refined craftsmanship and thoughtful design.
With this expansion, GamFratesi continues to explore the relationship between material, form, and touch, ensuring that every piece in the collection upholds the integrity and refinement that first defined Miau.
