It all started in December when Luca Nichetto and Oki Sato met in Stockholm for a coffee in Vetekatten, where they spoke about design and collaboration between designers of the past such as Ettore Sottsass with Shiro Kuramata.

Jokingly, they were told that now was their time, but that they should make products together to highlight their mutual respect and the affinity between their work, rather than showing existing work together.

During the winter holidays, Oki found a creative process in Japanese culture by which one person composes the first three lines (kami no ku) of a short poem known as a tanka, then sends them to a second person who composes the two final sentences (shimo no ku).

This led to the collaboration between Oki and Luca. Oki sent ideas which Luca concluded, and vice versa.
All of this was done in the span of a few days. Both designers accepted each other’s work completely.
The result: seven co-designed, co-conceived products and a great friendship.

Tutto è iniziato a dicembre quando Luca Nichetto e Oki Sato si sono incontrati in una famosa caffetteria di Stoccolma, Vetekatten. In questa occasione hanno parlato di design e della collaborazione tra i designer del passato, come Ettore Sottsass con Shiro Kuramata.

Scherzando, si sono detti che era arrivato il loro momento di collaborare, realizzando dei prodotti che evidenziassero il muto rispetto e le affinità progettuali che i due designers hanno, piuttosto che mostrare dei lavori che avevano già realizzato separatamente.

Durante le vacanze natalizie, Oki ha trovato un processo creativo della cultura Giapponese, tipico per la creazione di poesie brevi “tanka”, che vede una persona comporre le prime tre frasi (kami no ku) e successivamente le spedisce a una seconda persona che completa la poesia con altre due frasi (shimo no ku). Da qui è iniziata la collaborazione tra i due designer, che ha visto Oki inviare idee che Luca ha concluso e vice versa. Tutto questo è avvenuto in pochi giorni dove entrambi i designer hanno accettato completamente il lavoro del altro, ed il risultato è stato quello di sette prodotti co-disegnati e co-interpretati e la nascita di una grande amicizia.
