Brussels Design Talent
northmodern January 2016 will host a more ambitious Belgian push for the Scandinavian markets as the Belgian collaboration extends to include design centre Mode and Design (MAD) Brussels. Through their joint FORWARD initiative, MAD Brussels and Brussels Invest & Export seek to further develop Belgian designers’ trade relations in Scandinavia with the exhibit “Brussels Design Talents”. The exhibition combines selected new talents, spectacular stand design and celebrity curation. A jury led by the Belgian architecture and design star Julien De Smedt has nominated 7 talents for Brussels Design Talents. Julien De Smedt and the team looked for ambitious and innovative new talents looking to solve difficult problems through design.
Schools & Talents
northmodern has yet again made room for the new- and upcoming talents and will this season welcome KADK (Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademis Skoler for Arkitektur, Design og Konservering). They will be presenting their view on future Danish design with their exhibition NØW. The focus is design adjusted to the future in the shape of flexible furniture, safety carpets and adjustable bicycle helmets.
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) will participate in the area with their award exhibition, shown at Aller Publishing house in Copenhagen, where students from Danish design and architect schools are presenting their sustainable design projects.
Hagedornhagen x Noyer presents Special Installation
In collaboration with northmodern and Hagedornhagen Copenhagen, Noyer will open an installation focused on innovation and product development. The installation will present the audience with the basic ideas for four new possible products. The four products are not fully developed allowing visitors to get insight into the shaping and development of ideas.
Classic materials like cobber, leather and American walnut will be combined with bearings, magnets and avonite. The installation is developed in collaboration with the designers from hagedornhagen, and it illustrates the endless choices and possibility, which are connected with developing and designing new products.

northmodern Central
northmodern Central is northmodern’s inspiring ‘central station’. Design Circus is behind the concept and decor of the colourful northmodern Central universe of experiences, featuring curated new products, furniture and handmade objects from exhibitors in an inspirational and unique atmosphere.
The stage is set to reflect our modern times and includes a tribute to true craftsmanship, the concept developer and designer Birgit Tarp points out. The 225squaremetre northmodern Central is surrounded by fourmetrehigh bungalow walls, with four smaller entrances – a stunning spatial experience in the Center Hall of Bella Center Copenhagen.
Handmade
In recent years, the concept of ‘handmade’ has experienced a renaissance. Traditional craft skills have flourished and is represented by a new generation of designers who have rediscovered the value and quality of objects made by hand. In a post-industrial culture where traditional, physical objects are being digitalized and mass-produced, a new counter culture seeks to instate the individual and reveal the process of creating things by hand. The handmade logo at northmodern is designed by Design Circus and shows the piston effect that illustrates the human personal processing.
To pay tribute to this new movement of designers and unique handmade design, northmodern presents an exclusive exhibition of designers and modern craftsmen. Handmade is to be found in the centerhall.
