ON STAGE MATS THESELIUS
15 juni – 13 augusti 2006

The extremely versatile designer and artist Mats Theselius recently turned 50 and is being honored with a retrospective cavalcade at Form/Design Center showcasing parts of his production for Källemo. Mats Theselius has received several prestigious awards including the Bruno Mathsson Prize and the Torsten and Wanja Söderberg Prize.

The starting point for Mats Theselius toward a new idea is not the traditional one of making something that should be produced or sold. He has a different intention when he begins. A trip to the USA becomes the Sheriff chair with “spurs” and leather. A trip to India, where he sees an old fascinating motorcycle, must immediately become something when he returns home.

About the creation of the yellow National Geographic cabinet, he says: “I was lying in bed trying to quit smoking and started collecting National Geographic, I transported myself to other worlds, I was in jungles and on the moon, I visited craftsmen in different cultures. It became a mania, eventually I bought issues I already had. The magazines became so significant that the idea of making a special cabinet was born.”

Given your extensive curatorial work with Scandinavian design through scandinaviandesign.com, this type of retrospective exhibition text would fit perfectly within your platform’s editorial focus on designer profiles and creative processes.
