Böttcher & Kayser is a Berlin design studio founded in 2007 by Moritz Böttcher and Nikolaus Kayser. The studio designs furniture, lighting and consumer products, and much of its best-known work is made in Sweden for Johanson Design.
Background
Moritz Böttcher and Nikolaus Kayser were both born in 1978 and met in kindergarten. After school they took separate paths through design education and work in several countries and companies, then joined up again to start their own studio. For a period the studio worked as Böttcher Henssler Kayser, the name under which the SHIMA lounge chair for Johanson was launched.
Design approach
Their designs are clear and calm, with soft contours and few parts, made for homes as well as offices, hotels and schools. Many pieces do more than one job. DICE is a stool and a table, depending on which way up it sits. Babylon is a planter that also works as a room divider. The studio also designs for reuse: MILO’s upholstery can be replaced, so the chair can be repaired or refreshed instead of thrown away.
Key designs
For Johanson Design they have created a long series of products. These include the Bail chair, the Peak table, the stackable Stroll seating and the Plateau family. More recent additions are the DICE stool and table, the MILO armchairs and the AVA sofa system. Babylon continues their work with indoor greenery after SHIMA GARDEN and EDEN.
For Wendelbo they designed the Calibre side table, which pairs a cylindrical marble base with a slim steel frame. Other clients include Normann Copenhagen, Stelton, Ligne Roset, Prostoria, Mater, Schönbuch and Zero.
Recognition
The studio has received several iF and Red Dot Design Awards, including a Red Dot “Best of the Best”, as well as an Interior Innovation Award.
