Gustav Person: Furniture Craftsman and Poet of the Joint

gustav person

Gustav Person was born in 1983 near Halmstad, on Sweden’s west coast. He trained first as a furniture carpenter — two years at Grebbestad folkhögskola (2006–2008), then Möbelsnickeri at Carl Malmsten Furniture Studies (2008–2011), where he completed his gesällprov (journeyman’s test) with a small silver medal. He went on to Konstfack’s InSpace programme, earning a master’s degree in interior architecture and furniture design in 2013.

Design philosophy

Person rarely sets out to design a specific piece of furniture. Instead, he experiments with wood until a joint reveals what it is good for. Gaps and joinery are, for him, more than construction detail. He builds many of his pieces with demountable joints on purpose, so that whoever owns the furniture has to assemble and take it apart themselves — a physical relationship with the object rather than a passive one.

Recognition and Källemo

Person’s furniture was shown at the Stockholm Furniture Fair in 2008, 2011 and 2012, at Konstfack’s spring exhibition and the “Wood Punk” show during Stockholm Design Week in 2013, and in “Ett två trä” at Artipelag, Gustavsberg, the same year. Artipelag named him its newcomer of 2013, and Residence Magazine’s Form Prize named him Newcomer of the Year in 2014 for his Spänna table. The Värnamo furniture company Källemo discovered his work during these years and now produces several of his designs, including the Spänna table, the Pussel stool, Plint and Bänk.

Poetry and life today

Person is also a published poet. His exhibition “Provinssnickarens poesi” (“The Province Carpenter’s Poetry”), shown at Falkenbergs Museum, treats the joint as a metaphor for human relationships — arguing that the connections that hold people together, like the joints in a piece of furniture, must be both strong and flexible to last. He now lives and works in a converted farmstead in Julita, Sörmland, and teaches at design schools alongside his own practice.
