Jens Fager’s newest lighting collection for ZERO, SWELL, took its wave-patterned shades to Stockholm Design Days in February 2026 — a screened form built to control glare while letting the surface itself carry the visual interest, entirely manufactured in Sweden.

From carpentry to Konstfack, via Japan

Fager’s route into design ran through carpentry before industrial and product design studies at Tohoku University of Art & Design in Sendai, Japan, and a master’s in industrial design from Konstfack in Stockholm, completed in 2008 — the year he also founded his own studio and was named Designer of the Year by Residence magazine.

Reducing a product to its essence

Fager describes his studio’s core philosophy as treating every product honestly: finding its central function and reducing it to that essence, while still leaving room for “a sense of humour, surrealism and poetry” in the result. The Arc Stool, created for Sweden’s National Museum of Fine Arts on its 2020 reopening, is now in the collection of the Museum of Furniture Studies; earlier work is held at Gothenburg’s Röhsska Museum.

Furniture for public and private space

For Edsbyn, Fager designed the Everlong sofa system, modular seating adjustable to the millimetre for spaces like airports and museums, and for the Danish manufacturer Gejst, the Luno stool, its silhouette drawn from a waxing and waning moon. His Avec armchair for Källemo sits alongside a long-running lighting relationship with Muuto, including the Tip floor and wall lamp and the Soft side table.

A decade with Zero

Fager’s longest manufacturer relationship is with the lighting company Zero, where the Convex and Compose families have expanded steadily for over a decade, alongside SWELL as the newest addition. More of his work is on view at jensfager.se.
