Johan Ansander is a Swedish furniture designer based in Stockholm. He made his name with Maximus, a chunky all-wood armchair that started as his master’s degree project and became his first product for Blå Station. He has worked with the company ever since, exploring how digital tools and local production can give wood new forms.
Background
Ansander was born and raised in Gothenburg and later settled in Stockholm. He completed his master’s degree at Konstfack, University of Arts, Crafts and Design, in 2020. When the school’s degree exhibition moved online during the pandemic, he and fellow students staged their own pop-up show in central Stockholm. From there Maximus was picked for the EX-WORKS 2020 exhibition at Stockholm’s Museum of Furniture Studies. Blå Station’s CEO and design manager Johan Lindau saw it there and brought him straight in.
Design approach
Rather than searching for hidden forms in the wood, Ansander treats it as a malleable material. He shapes it in 3D-modelling software and mills it on CNC routers. He is interested in theories that everyday objects should in future be made locally instead of by global mass production. The meeting of local manufacturing and new technology is his main focus, together with ways to sculpt material that avoid the most rational, conventional solutions.
Key designs
Maximus, launched in 2021, turns pieces of solid ash into a soft, almost sketched armchair that looks like furniture from a comic strip. In 2023 it gained an upholstered sibling, MAX, with the same footprint and visible seams that give it a playful character. The OM chair moves in the opposite direction. It weighs only 4.5 kg, and a single moulded plywood piece turns the rear legs into the backrest; padded leather backrests followed in 2024.
The Frankfurter chair from 2026 was inspired by the shape of a forearm, with more volume in the wood and generous radii. At Salone del Mobile 2026 it grew into a bistro set with the upholstered Frankfurter Dressed and a matching table.
