Background
Kauppi & Kauppi is the Swedish design duo of Johan and Nina Kauppi, who grew up at opposite ends of the country — one in the far north, one in the far south. Both earned MFA degrees from HDK-Valand, the Academy of Art and Design at the University of Gothenburg, graduating in 2006, and spent the following decade working in-house and under their own names across a range of design fields in Sweden and abroad, including several years in New York and Frankfurt. In late 2016, after being each other’s sidekick and discussion partner for ten years, they decided to found a shared studio.
Two skill sets, one studio
The partnership pairs Nina’s focus on product and industrial design — small-scale objects, details and tactility, honed in part through work for clients including Tiffany & Co in New York — with Johan’s background in spatial design, spanning bridges, outdoor furniture, exhibitions and showrooms. Together they work across interior, product and industrial design and strategic creative services, moving comfortably between large spatial projects and small tactile objects, and tend to develop their designs as collections and product families rather than single pieces.
“How does this design contribute — what justifies the existence of it?”
That question, the studio says, guides every project regardless of scale, alongside an ongoing interest in the contrast between nature and the urban, north and south. The result is a design language the studio describes as pure and modest, built around the small added values that make a piece feel genuine.
Furniture and lighting
For Skandiform Kauppi & Kauppi has designed the Allé furniture family, including the Allé Mini chair and the Allé Divider screen, as well as the Hedge collection. For Ifö Electric they have designed a run of lighting including the Ohm family — winner of an iF Design Award in 2020 — and the Solenne collection. For Karl Andersson & Söner they designed the Hygge collection and the Pivå table series, and for Glimakra Sweden the BuildUp range of meeting pods and pavilions. For TreCe they designed KLOSS, a modular recycling-furniture system.
Recognition
Kauppi & Kauppi’s work has received a string of international design awards, including the iF Design Award, the Muuuz Design Award — twice, for BuildUp and for Ohm Wall — and recognition at the Archiproduct Design Awards.
