Ralph Erskine 7.11 2015 – 10.1 2016
Architect with a commitment to society and people.
Vandalorum is pleased to present, in collaboration with Värnamo municipality, an exhibition about architect Ralph Erskine (1914-2005). Erskine’s move from England to Sweden was inspired by social housing development. During the 1930s and 40s, Sweden was a pioneering country in terms of social welfare and housing construction ambitions. As an architect, Erskine had clear ideas about what kind of society architecture could help create.
The exhibition focuses on Erskine’s work around social issues and interaction. An important aspect in all projects he participated in was to develop architecture, design, and social responsibility in close connection. This is evident in his urban development projects, with Brittgården in Tibro and Nya Bruket in Sandviken as examples, where a varied scale of buildings and the design of houses create opportunities for interaction. The exhibition presents the residential areas Tibro: Brittgården, Ekerö: Centrum, Nora: Gyttorp, Sandviken: Nya bruket. The exhibition also includes a new documentary film about Erskine by journalist Christoffer Barnekow and architectural historian Martin Rörby.
The exhibition is produced by Tibro municipality. Photo: Photographer unknown, from the collections of the National Centre for Architecture and Design.
