Alexander Lervik is the subject of a major retrospective at Kulturhuset Stadsteatern in Stockholm, running from 6 April to 5 August 2018 in Gallery 3.
Titled In the Mind of Alexander Lervik, Designer, the exhibition spans two decades of work and offers a rare look into the thinking behind one of Sweden’s most inventive design careers.
Born in 1972 and trained at Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm — graduating in 1998 — Lervik has built a practice defined by conceptual rigour and entrepreneurial energy.
His work ranges from conference furniture and everyday cutlery to experimental lighting and architectural installations, with recurring themes of darkness, material exploration, and invention.
A central thread in Lervik’s career is his preoccupation with light — and its absence. The desire to create what he calls “a lamp that gives darkness” reflects both a poetic sensibility and a deeply personal motivation: a long struggle with the dark Nordic seasons that began in his late teens. Over time, he transformed that difficulty into creative fuel, producing work in which light is not taken for granted.
The retrospective presents objects, prototypes, and ideas that place Lervik firmly in the tradition of Scandinavian design while pushing against its conventions. The exhibition was produced by Kulturhuset Stadsteatern.
Lervik’s work is held in the permanent collections of Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo, Röhsska museet in Gothenburg, and Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.
