Alexander Lervik (b. 1972) is a Swedish designer working across furniture, lighting, product design and architecture from his studio in Stockholm (lervik.se), with a second base on a farm near Simrishamn in Österlen, in the south of Sweden. His range is unusually wide — household objects and door handles sit alongside gallery-scale sculpture, staircases and hospitality interiors — all approached from the same starting point: how an object changes the experience of the person using it.
He graduated from Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm in 1998 with a degree project titled “10 stools – 10 decades,” which went on to tour internationally for six years and gave him an international profile before he had built a studio around it. He opened his own practice in Stockholm shortly after, moving fluidly between industrial production and one-off artistic work — a combination he describes as feeding into itself, since experimenting in the artistic field makes him a better designer of industrial products.
Over the following two decades his furniture and lighting have been produced by companies including Johanson Design, Skandiform, Design House Stockholm and Skargaarden. Individual pieces have carried their own recognition: the Nordic carpet (2001) received an Excellent Swedish Design award, the Lucy table (2013) won a Red Dot Design Award, and the Mr Jones sofa (2017) was named Elle Decoration’s Furniture of the Year. Earlier work such as the Brighthandle door handle (2001), which communicates through coloured light, and the Red Chair (2005), built from seven bent steel coils, are now held in the permanent collections of Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo, and the Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg.
Light has stayed a constant thread in his work, partly as a response to the Swedish climate: as he has put it, the darkness that dominates much of the year makes LED technology — compact, low on heat — a way of introducing light into places it would not previously have fit. That interest continues through his lighting work at Noon, where he serves as artistic director alongside his furniture practice.
In 2013 he founded Tingest, a Scandinavian home-goods brand built around sustainable, locally manufactured products. Five years later, the retrospective “Twenty Years of Design” filled 900 square metres of Kulturhuset in Stockholm, tracing two decades of the practice from early student work through to industrial production.
In April 2026 he opened a gallery on the farm outside Simrishamn where he and his family now live, showing fifteen unique glass vases made with Kosta Boda’s glassblowing team alongside earlier collectible pieces including the Red Chair. The move reflects a view on sustainability he returns to often: that the most meaningful environmental contribution a designer can make is not a choice of material but a design built to last, and valued highly enough as an object, that it gets kept rather than replaced.
